By Kate B.

Colours mean so much to us and affect us in so many different ways whether we notice it or not. They affect our emotions and our state of mind. Colour is one of the deciding factors when we buy flowers. But what do these colours mean and how will they affect us?

Yellow is commonly known as the bright and cheerful colour. It also stimulates memory. Due to both of these factors, yellow flowers are often used in classrooms. Some examples of yellow flowers include sunflowers, roses, begonias, and hibiscus.

The colour white represents being clean and pure. White flowers often have a very strong scent and are often more expensive than other colours of the same flower. These flowers seem to glow at night and for that reason are a good choice for dinner parties. Some examples of white flowers are gardenias, lilies, and narcissi.

Blue is a beautiful choice of flower. It represents a calm and cool feeling and is also very relaxing. These seem to be a popular choice for bathrooms. Some popular blue flowers are veronicas, iris, and hydrangeas.

Red is a very popular colour for flowers and because of it’s boldness represents assertion. Also been known to be associated with passion and to raise the heartbeat level. Red flowers are often used in supermarkets to encourage people to purchase them. The most popular red flower is the rose. Some other types of red flowers are geraniums, and poinsettias

Green shows a caring and home-loving spirit. This is the colour of nature. Green flowers make for a very nice background to other, bolder coloured flowers. It’s uses as a stress reliever have also been found to be very relaxing. Green is a more popular colour for plants than flowers. These plants include ferns, ivies, and palms.

Pink is a very popular colour for flowers. This may be because flowers are often given to women and this colour is ultra-feminine. It calms the nerves and pink flowers also tend to have a beautiful fragrance. Popular pink flowers are carnations, azaleas, and impatiens.
